Check out the Tools area. There you will find a list of tools
that you will need, including links to sites with complete
kits.
Before you begin any work you should be aware of the dangers
of working with electrical systems! It is best you unplug the system until you
are better familiar with safety precautions. You should also beware
of ESD (Electro-Static Discharge). You can pass
this charge on to sensitive components and damage them.
Home study
courses are not a bad investment. A good home study course can fill in a lot of blanks.
Industry publications will be most helpful also. Reference books
are a must. On the HOME page you will find links to sites where you can find a few books I have found
useful.
You do not need a building for your shop. A decently
sized desk will do. It is a good idea to invest in some "known good"
parts if you plan on doing diagnostics on other systems. Depending
on the amount of work you plan to do, a complete "test bed" system is the
way to go.
If you plan to make a career of repairing
computers professionally go of it, you
may want to look into getting certified. The most common and most
recognized is the A+ Certification for PC
Technicians. I did it and it was easy. If you like working with
your hands and like tinkering with things then you will enjoy being a
technician too. Good Luck!

My Shop
My shop is in Columbia,
Maryland. If you live nearby, e-mail me for further contact info and
rates. I don't like to receive or ship systems due to the likelihood
of damage, so if I can't drive and pick it up, or you can't drop it off,
sorry, I can't do the repair. BUT, you have this site! Most
repair is very easy and I will be glad to offer some phone support.
Just call me at 410.730.5260 or Email me at
info@jvscomputers.net. Thanks. |
